In contemporary capoeira groups, newcomers are symbolically ‘baptised’ into the community at a public ceremony called their Batizado (literally baptism) held during festival. Novices play game with guest expert, get first belt and thereafter they members of teacher’s group. Drawing on long term, two-handed ethnography diasporic contemporanea in UK, including observation 53 such festivals, ceremonial features analysed. At all stages ‘welcome’, before, after batizado, topic gender is explored. last 40 years, women have become enthusiastic participants core groups we studied. The article compares sociological (symbolic interactionist) anthropological approaches to ceremonies rituals as drawing Glaser, Strauss Katz compared van Gennep, Turner MacAloon.
